教學方式

Participate: Learning is a social act and can be best achieved within a community of learners (this class) through engaging, collaborative, and participatory class discussions. Each student is expected to engage in the assigned readings carefully, actively, and critically and come prepared to be an active participant of class discussions. Your individual contributions and serious participation in class activities benefit the entire community of learners (the class). Attend all classes: Our class meets only once a week. The types and content of the activities and discussions that take place in the classroom cannot be accessed outside of class; therefore, attendance is essential. Attendance will be taken every day in the first five minutes of class, so be punctual. However, we are all human so 3 unexcused absences are allowed per semester; more than 3 unexcused absences will lead to the failure of this course. Take note that your unexcused absences will still reflect towards your 10% attendance grade. Be an independent learner: You and you alone are responsible for your learning (not the instructor), and you also have an impact on the learning of others. Just going through the motions of completing course assignments at the bare minimum level of effort is not the type of academic work that earns a good grade. Points will be deducted off late work. If you feel you might have difficulty turning in any assignments, please contact me as soon as possible before the due date. Be honest: Cheating, plagiarizing, and photocopying textbooks are NOT tolerated and will result in the failure of the course. Since our course schedule is tentative, I reserve the right to adjust the course schedule and due dates as necessary due to unforeseeable circumstances. Please be advised that you are responsible for keeping track of, and complying with, any changes to the schedule and/or the assignment deadlines.

評分方式

110% Attendance and in class participation This part includes attendance, in-class work, and discussions. If you miss class, you cannot make up any of it afterwards. Coming to class and being an active learner is very important in this course. 20% Summary presentations (5 min) You will be broken down into groups (4 groups of 4). The teacher will first lead the discussion on the topic of the week. Then groups will have time to prepare a short summary presentation. Finally, one random group will be chosen to make a summary presentation. Students will be graded on their ability to summarize the content and delivery skills. We will have 11 topics this semester, so each groups should go at least twice. Your score will be a summary of the two scores. The remaining topics can be volunteered and will not be scored. 10% Notes Groups will produce a summary of the discussion topic which will be collected and assessed. 15% Impromptu speaking Students will be put in groups of 4 and take on different roles for different sessions. When the student is a speaker, he/she will deliver an impromptu speech and be assessed. In this class, the speaker will be assessed twice. Your score will be the average of those two scores. 5% VOD passport - Each student is required to attend at least 5 sessions of English Table held by NCTU Language Center (for more information: http://ltrc.nctu.edu.tw/). You need to collect a stamp or the teacher’s signature on the VOD Passport after each session you attend. - Another option is attending Toastmaster’s International, a club that focuses on English public speaking skills. You may attend Toastmaster’s in place of 5 English Tables. For more information please visit http://hsinchu.toastmastersclubs.org/ 20% Midterm (Oral exam) Students will take individual oral exams that will be recorded. The recordings will be uploaded on E3, so that students can re-listen/watch their response and learn from their mistakes. 20% Final Presentations (10 min) Students will deliver an individual presentation on a topic of their choice (approved by the teacher). Your presentation should include activities/content that encourage class participation. Be creative and use the skills learnt in class.
