The purpose of this course is to develop students’ advanced academic writing skills. Students will learn to perform written tasks required in scientific research. Through lectures, readings, written assignments, and discussions, students will be able to write research reports, proposals, theses, dissertations, and journal articles in their own academic disciplines. Specific objectives set out for students are: 1. to understand the language and structure conventions for presenting one’s research in academia; 2. to become familiar with discipline-specific research writing; 3. to critically review and effectively revise one’s own writing; 4. to develop critical and logical thinking skills.
Students who wish to take this course must attend the first class. Students who are absent on the first day of class will be dropped from the class list.
Attendance: Attendance will be taken in the beginning of every class so please be on time. Two points will be deducted from your final grade for each unexcused absence. Please register your absence on the NCTU Students Leave System (http://stuoffcourse.nctu.edu.tw/). Absence from class cannot be an excuse for missing important announcements or late assignments. If you are absent, it is your responsibility to find out what you have missed (e.g., check E3 or get notes & handouts from peers). Writing Assignments: You will write 3 major assignments for this course: a research abstract, introduction, and paraphrasing assignment. In-Class Assignments: There will be several in-class writing exercises. You’re required to finish them during class time and upload them to E3. If you miss a class, you’ll have to make up the in-class assignments. Academic Integrity: All students are expected to adhere to the University policy concerning academic integrity. Cheating on the exam or plagiarizing will lead to the failure of this course.
1. Attendance: 10% 2. Midterm & Final exams: 30% 3. Writing Assignments (Abstract, Introduction, & Paraphrasing assignment): 40% 4. In-class assignments: 20%
