This course introduces the basic hardware structure of a modern programmable computer. Students will learn the eight great ideas in computer architecture, how to define and measure computer performance, the (machine) instructions and language, transformations from high-level language programs to machine executable programs, how computers perform logic and arithmetic operations, how to design a processor, how to design large/fast memory, storage systems, I/O system, and understand why an integration of them (processor, memory, storage, etc.) performs as a modern computer does. Topics may also cover parallel processors such as in multicore, grid, cluster, and cloud computing.
"Digital Circuit Design (數位電路設計)" or similar background RTL implementation with Verilog HDL
Basic form is classroom lectures. Laboratory experiments will be conducted by TAs. e3 platform will be used as the medium for course announcements and communications.
Exams: 65% (3 written examinations) Term Project: 20-25% (4-5 parts + 2 demos) Participation/Quizzes: 10-15% (Above is suggestion only; to be discussed with students and aligned with other classes of this course)
