概述

This is the second segment of a year-long writing course for the freshman in our department. We will continue the essential practice for essay writing skills including brainstorming, drafting, editing and revising. As the writing skill does not improve alone without the support of other English skill we will review TED talks regularly through which students could build balanced English skills (vocabulary, listening & speaking) and enjoy synergic effects from the advancement of other aspects of English. Practice is the only way to improve one’s writing skills; you will write many short essays throughout the semester. The best way of learning is to teach others; you will work closely with your peers through sharing ideas and thoughts and providing your critical reviews of their writing.

教學方式

More on writing assignments: deadlines and time management • You will write two drafts for each topic. The first draft will be edited by your classmate during class (peer-editing), and the second draft will be reviewed and given a grade by the instructor. • You will type, print and bring the first draft to class for peer-editing. Revise your second draft based on comments from your peers, and submit the second draft to the instructor. • The second draft should be submitted to e3 course website electronically in PDF format (editable Word-docs are NOT accepted), no later than the class time (i.e. Monday 9 am). Any work after this deadline won’t be accepted (except for unavoidable instances). • If you continue to be late on homework or if you miss classes more than three times, I’d ask you to withdraw this course. You may take the course again when you are ready to commit. More on TED Vocab review Your writing skill won’t improve without advance of other English skills such as vocabulary, reading, listening and speaking. They tend to improve in tandem, and you will have to work on other aspects of English as well in order to see significant improvements on your writing skills. Each week, you will be asked to review a TED talk, a formal speech on a variety of issues, preferably on topics relevant to your writing assignments. You will be tested only on the vocabulary items appeared on each TED talk, but ideally, it is hoped that you’d have a fuller exposure to all aspects of English skills. Policy on collaboration and academic integrity You are permitted to work with other students on the homework assignments, but you must write up the draft on your own. Assuming other people’s work as your own can never be justified/tolerated in any case. Plagiarism is a serious academic misconduct and you will get “0” for that case. Basic class etiquette Needless to say, you are expected to attend classes on time. Should you miss the class (sickness, emergencies, or any unavoidable reasons), please send me an email ahead of time. No electric devices (e.g. cell phones, laptops) are allowed during class.
