In this course, we will examine the ideas of fashion, textiles and the body in medieval English, French, and Latin literature. We will chart our way through the European clothing styles of different social classes between the 8th and 15th centuries, via literary works in different genres including romances, religious poems, treatises, etiquette manuals, sermons, encyclopedias...etc., to explore the longstanding, intertwined relationship between text and textile, word and object in medieval art and literature. Students are strongly encouraged to go to the screenings by the NCTU Film Center Spring Series 2019: "Clothes Talk: Fashion, Clothes and the Body." Two films (3/27 & 5/1) from this series will be included as materials for this course.
Introduction to Western Literature (I) English Literature (I)
Each week/class is devoted to a specific topic. For each topic, students should be prepared to read 1-3 literary texts and 2-4 academic papers. As we don't have enough time to read the texts or papers line by line in class, students are strictly required to pre-read all the materials and come to class with a sufficient knowledge of all the texts and papers discussed that week. Please note: The instructor reserves the exclusive right to change the syllabus and adjust the reading load at her sole discretion depending on the real progress of the class. Please note: Syllabus uploaded here is only tentative. A finalized syllabus in detail will be given in the first meeting.
