In this course, we will study the novels and film adaptations of Kazuo Ishiguro, the Nobel Prize winner in Literature 2017. Through analyses on narrative, theme, characters, metaphors, symbols and settings, we will explore and contemplate together with the novelist's insight, contemplation and exploration of history, humanities, war, human life and universe. Ishiguro, "in novels of great emotional force, has uncovered the abyss beneath our illusory sense of connection with the world"( Nobel Prize motivation). Furthermore, we can investigate how his works impinge impact on our reflection on the past and our imagination of the future with his unique literary style, politics and aesthetics. We will also investigate the film adaptations from his novels to compare the representation of his fictional world in different media.

Class participation and discussions: 10% Preview the weekly assigned reading and participate in class discussion (skipping the class without official document or medical proof will result in deduction of grades. Skipping 3 classes will result in failure of this course) Quiz: 10% Group Oral Presentations: 15% In the form of group presentation, each student will participate in one 30-minute oral presentation. Grading will be based on group performance. Midterm exam: 30% Final exam: 35%
