美國文學(二)

This course introduces students to some major authors and literary works in American literature, from 1865 to the present. We will highlight issues such as modernism and modernity, immigration and migration, and the representation of social differences (race, ethnicity, gender, sexuality, and so on) in American literature.

CLASS ATTENDANCE You have to sign up on an attendance sheet each week. Whenever you miss one class, I will dock 3 points (out 0f 10). If you are late for more than 20 minutes, I will count it as absence. If you have to miss classes for legitimate reasons (official or sick leave), please let me know in advance/in person. I will not count your legitimate leave as absence unless there are more than THREE times. INDIVIDUAL/GROUP REPORT OR EXTRACURRICULAR READING You may present a group report on one of our assigned texts (two people to introduce an author, summarize assigned readings, and point out important themes in 15 minutes) or present an individual report on one crucial text not included in our anthology (please summarize the story and show us crucial topics in 10-15 minutes). In our schedule, you will see a dual report system: the numbers in brackets (for example, [1]) are for group reports; below our weekly assigned readings are the texts for individual reports. Please come to me to sign up for reports. Unless you report in a careless manner, you may expect to obtain 90-100 points for your one-time report. If you do not present any individual or group report, you have to do extracurricular reading (we will decide one specific text together in class). Once the extracurricular reading is decided, you may have the chance to report your response in class or answer one relevant question on the final exam. DISCUSSION AND PARTICIPATION Instead of having weekly quizzes, we will discuss our readings in the third hour. I will have students ask or answer questions. You may earn 1 point for trying to answer questions or asking interesting questions. You will get 2 points for answering questions in an engaging manner. By "engaging," I mean you use textual evidence to support your idea. At the end of the third hour, please come to me to claim your points. If you never participate in discussion, you will lose 20 points for the final score. MID-TERM AND FINAL EXAMS You may refer to your textbook or notes during the mid-term and final exams. Some of the questions will come from our in-class discussion. There will also be questions (10-15%) coming from your classmates' reports. If you have been paying attention to people's reports, you do not have to do extra work to prepare yourself for those questions.
