概述

As traffic crashes on the road increasingly add substantial social costs to the transportation system, there is an increasing demand in traffic safety professionals. Traffic safety is not only a multidisciplinary but also interdisciplinary field, as it involves human factors, vehicle design, roadway design, and their interactions. The course also aims to keep students abreast of recent state-of-the-art engineering and policy practices, and scientific advances.

先修科目

This course assumes that you have a good grasp of the concepts and materials covered in Statistics and Traffic Engineering.

ASSIGNMENTS There are two types of work you will do during the semester: homework, reading assignments, and a term project. Students are encouraged to work with others in the class. 1. Reading assignment (each team has to select a journal paper to present to the class). For the assignment, each team will need to select a paper listed the last page of the syllabus and address the following questions (oral presentation and a 2-page report one week after the presentation): a. What is the research question? ? Why this research question is important? ? What challenges to be addressed in the paper? b. The study design of the paper c. Research results and implications d. Assess the robustness of the results e. Research needed to further address the research question raised in this paper 2. Term project: The term project involves evaluating the effects of (1) seatbelt, (2) speed limits, or (3) advance driver assist system on safety, and discuss it in great detail. Real-world data will be made available to analyze these topics. Each team has to choose a project topic from the topics listed above. The maximum group size is 3. There will be significant emphasis on the use of the statistical software STATA (STATA 14). This software is ONLY free to students WHO SIGN UP FOR THIS CLASS. My expectation for the three presentations are as follows: a. First Presentation: literature review and study design b. Second Presentation: progress on data analysis c. Final Presentation: analysis results (interpret the results and discuss implications) 3. Homework: To be determined. GRADING Term project with three progress briefings (50%), one research paper briefing (10%), class participation (students are encouraged to ask and answer questions, contribute information, and express their views on subject matter) (20%), and homework and a final exam (20%).
