Focusing on Ang Lee's films and related socio-cultural phenomena, we will investigate how his cinematic aesthetics and politics make him a successful director of global films. Besides, being engaged in nuanced and critical rethinking of the dialectical relationship between the global and the local, we will discuss how he has become a cultural crosser in the East-West encounter. We will also investigate the capital flow and cultural flow in film making and marketing in the wake of globalization. Other issues to be explored include: global modernity and transnational diaspora; post-modern time-space compression; the formation of gender or cultural identities in the intersection between nation, race, and gender; the possibilities of ethnicity or fetishism as cultural discourse; and the relationship between transnational imaginary and media spectatorship.
