This course aims to study different forms of border politics and their discursive formation in different historical contexts. This course will be composed of two parts. In the first part, we will focus on the theoretical considerations on the questions of border politics and discursive formation. We select texts from Freud, Lacan, Althusser, Ranciere, Agamben, and discuss the fundamental theoretical questions of the partition of We group and Them group, the justification of the count of the part and non-part, the violence of law, state apparatus, and ideology. In the second part, we will focus on the global context of border politics in contemporary societies, particularly the rise of new colonialism, new racism, global logistics, and local infrastructure. We select texts from Foucault, Fanon, Sandro Mezzadra, Brett Neilson, David Harvey, Hanna Arendt, Walter Mignolo, and look into questions of the historical factors and the contemporary geopolitics, such as BRI and its impact on local societies. We will end our discussion on the potential project of decolonization in our time. This class will incorporate participants’ projects and work on various issues related to the questions on border politics, unequal citizens, discursive formation. We welcome recommendations of examples of documentaries, films, art exhibitions, literature, political debates, citizenship politics, the logistics of Special Economic Zones, migrant workers and refugees. We will try to include cases from Taiwan, China, Hong Kong, Northeast Asia, Southeast Asia, Central Asia, Middle East, and Africa, depending on the need of the participants in this class. The objective of this course is to assist students to think through their problematics and conduct their project.

A Set of Relations_Belledent Céline (Jean Monnet University – Centre Max Weber.)/English Lecture series Behind train journeys and their contemplative representations of the movement in literature and cinema, we find a set of relations affecting the space and the people traveling. In the 19th century in France, railways have been a colossal project to “implement progress and development” all over the colonial empire and its metropolis. This means of transportation is, from its starts until now, entangled between apparently contradictory governmentalities as public service and private profits. Furthermore, trains themselves can also be described as “intense spaces of transitory sociality” (Sara Ahmed, The Cultural Politics of Emotion, 2014, p. 215). In this speech, I propose to map this set of relations based on discourse analysis, observations, and interviews I conducted on a particular local train line in between Saint-Etienne and Lyon. Biography: Celine Belledent is an associate researcher in the sociology research department Max Weber (section Public Cultures) in Saint-Etienne (France). Her researches intend to map hegemonic and minoritarian relations of the contemporary, at a local and global level. Her PhD dissertation explored the links between sexuality and civilization concerns. She actually studies a local train line between Saint-Etienne and Lyon. She teaches in the educational sciences and sociology departments of the University Jean Monnet as well as in a social workers school.

Lecture: 3:00~5:30 by Mikkel Bolt Rasmussen Title: Insolvency --The avant-garde after the end of modernism and the end of the working class movement in the West Within art historical scholarship it is customary to argue that the avant-garde disappeared with World War Two or at the latest in the 1960s. As Rosalind Krauss writes in her influential essay “The Originality of the Avant-Garde”: “The historical period that the avant-garde shared with modernism is over.” I will engage in a critical re-reading of the notion of the avant-garde in art and propose a new, historical materialist reading of the disappearance of the avant-garde. *** Mikkel Bolt Rasmussen 介紹 Mikkel Bolt Rasmussen is a professor at the Department of Arts and Cultural Studies, University of Copenhagen. He has published Crisis to Insurrection (Minor Compositions, 2015), Hegel after Occupy (Sternberg Press, 2018), After the Great Refusal: Essays on Contemporary Art, its Contradictions and Difficulties (Zero Books, 2018) and Trump’s Counter-Revolution (Zero Books, 2018) and a number of books in Danish. He has published articles about anti-capitalist activism, the revolutionary tradition, and the Situationist International.
