動態影像與時間性的批評:亞洲電影裡的酷兒與群鬼

本課將以亞洲電影出發,由當代電影與動態影像理論、酷兒理論與後殖民理論的角度交叉碰撞與思索鬼魂與酷兒形象所代表的理論意義。我們會思索影像與時間和記憶的關係,也會討論影像與歷史的理論聯繫,更會探討影像作為檔案的矛盾性。 這會是理論與電影/動態影像研究並重的一堂課;我們將以理論思索影像,也會反過來,以影像思索理論。 This course investigates what figures of ghosts and queers mean in Asian cinema. We will read postcolonial theory, theories of film and the moving image, contemporary queer thoughts on affects and negativity, and recent scholarly literature on Asian cinema and queer cinema. We will also inquire the relations between images and history, and between images and the archive—and see how figures of ghosts and queers destabilize the theoretical assumptions of film images as visual evidence and documents of history. This course is both a theory course and a cinema studies course. We will not only read theoretical texts but also watch film texts carefully, and see how we may analyze films through theory, as well as problematize theory through films.

Course Requirements This is a graduate seminar—which means that students are expected to be active participants of the class (no passive consumers, please.) 1. In-class presentation and discussion: 20% Each week, students should take turn to present their reading of weekly assigned materials. Those who are not presenting should also read the materials in advance. * Those who are absent for more than 3 times without a good reason will get a “zero” for this item. 2. Mid-term analytical essay: 20% Students will have to write an analytical essay of a course reading. (Length: 2,500 words in minimum.) 3. Final presentation: 20% Each student will present a talk on their final project at the end of the semester. 4. Term paper: 40 % Each student should write a term-paper. (Length: 20-25pages). You may use the theories we learn in class to analyze film/moving-image/art texts, or vice versa—using film/moving-image/art texts of your choice to complicate or problematize theory. 本課以研究所討論課(seminar)形式進行。同學必須是課堂上的主動參與者,而不是被動的消費者。因此除了書面報告與期末作業,主動參與課堂討論亦是學生學習與教師評量的重點。 1. 課堂口頭報告及討論:20% 修課同學必須輪流在課堂上做口頭報告。報告內容為當週閱讀之文獻。 沒有報告的同學亦應讀完課堂要求閱讀之文獻,並參與討論(包含在Slack電子黑板討論與書寫筆記)。 *無故缺席3次以上者,本項零分。 2. 期中書面作業:20% 修課同學選定一個或兩個上課討論過的理論文本,做理論分析。約2500字或以上(字數不包含註釋)。(大學部同學約1500-2000字即可) 3. 期末口頭報告:20% 報告內容為同學自己想要做的期末作業題目,報告人說明想要選擇的影像文本為何、想要以何角度與理論來分析等。沒有報告的同學則提供回應與建議。 4. 期末書面報告:40% 同學自行選取一至數個影像文本,以本堂課所討論之理論做影像分析。亦可反向思考,由影像文本出發,思索所讀理論文本之適用性與侷限。 論文篇幅:研究生論文7500-10000字,大學部同學約4000字。
