This course aims to introduce issues pertaining to "cinema and borders" to students. The course has two primary goals. First, it will introduce students ways of “reading a film through a critic’s eyes.” Students will not only learn how to “read films” by paying attention to their narratives, but also study the aesthetic devices that the films employ, including lighting, cinematography, editing, sound design, acting, music, and mise-en-scene. The second goal of this course is to introduce issues about "borders" in contemporary society to students. Specifically, we will examine how people who cross various forms of borders—including teenagers, gender and sexual minorities, migrants, immigrants, and foreigners—are presented in films, and why. Ultimately, students who take this course will learn how to “read a film critically," and to reflect on issues of "borders" and "border-crossing" in the contemporary globalizing world.
1. Competence in English. 2. Willingness to learn how to “read a film carefully” is a must. Being a film buff/ film-lover is a plus.
Each class meeting consists of two sessions. In the first session of the class, the course instructor will give a lecture on weekly assigned film and readings. In the second session, the course instructor will initiate a series of class discussions on film texts and the social issues that the films address. Students who take this course should 1) **watch the weekly assigned films in advance;** 2) **actively participate in class discussions.**
