This course is an integrated 4-skill (listening, speaking, reading, & writing) curriculum with a focus on reading and writing. This course will address reading and paragraph writing while supporting the communicative skills addressed in the first semester. In this course, students will: 1. Develop critical reading skills 2. Engage in reflection on readings 3. Apply insights gained from readings 4. Orally paraphrase and summarize texts, and reflect on the texts in oral discussion 5. Write complete paragraphs with topic sentences, relevant supporting details, transition words, and concluding sentences 6. Continue to develop listening and speaking skills

I. Attendance 10% II. Participation 25% Includes quizzes, in-class activities, homework, and impromptu speaking The more you participate, the higher your score will be. III. VOD Passport語言學習護照 5% Students must go to Library B1 Language Center to practice GEPT practice tests or study English related materials. You will get one stamp on your passport after spending 30 minutes in the center. By the end of the semester, you need to have 10 stamps. Mind that you can only get one stamp per day. English Tables can also count as one stamp. IV. GEPT after-class activities 10% URL: http://140.113.9.17/ ( 學生帳號及密碼 : 學號 ) Log in problems, please contact: Echo Wang ext. 52761 Freshman English (I): 新版1-4 Freshman English (II): 新版5-7 You will do 1 in-class practice test and 3 new online GEPT practice tests (test: 5, 6, and 7). You have the entire semester to pace yourself and finish these three online tests. You will receive scores for the amount of tests you do. For example, if you do all three tests, you will receive 3/3, if you only do two tests, you will receive 2/3. Then this score will be averaged with a GEPT exam you will take in class in the semester. The average score will be your GEPT total score which will take up 10% of your total grade. V. Required writing assignment 10% (a passage of at least 200 words) Students will write 2 paragraph assignments, a minimum of 200 words each. Students will be taught how to write a paragraph that contains a topic sentence and supporting details. Please follow the structure taught in class to obtain full score in this assignment. VI. Midterm Exam 20% VII. Final Exam 20%
