This course is an integrated 4-skill (listening, speaking, reading, & writing) curriculum with a focus on reading and writing. This course will address reading and paragraph writing while supporting the communicative skills addressed in the first semester. In this course, students will: 1. develop critical reading skills, 2. engage in reflection on readings, 3. apply insights gained from readings, 4. orally paraphrase and summarize texts, and reflect on the texts in oral discussion, 5. write complete paragraphs with topic sentences, relevant supporting details, transition words, and concluding sentences, and 6. continue to develop listening and speaking skills.
Students should come to the class with the assigned homework completed and are expected to actively participate in class time activities. To receive full credit in attendance, students must arrive to class on time and participate for the full session. Only 3 excused absences are allowed. After that, 20 points will be taken away from your attendance grade for each of your absences. Notify the instructor if you will be unable to participate. During the weekly class time, the class will read texts on various topics and respond to the reading input. Students will be engaged in various class activities, such as whole-class discussion, pair and group work, and role play. Some of the in-class activities require you to complete assignments in advance. Assignment completion and participation in these in-class activities are requirements and will be a part of your course grade (20%). The mid-term and final exams aim to evaluate students' English reading and vocabulary competence in the various topics covered in class. The writing assignment aims to develop students' paragraph writing in English. You are required to write a paragraph of 170 to 200 words in English (typed in MS Word document, double-spaced) to respond to an assigned topic covered in class. Collecting stamps on VOD passport encourages students to explore English learning resources, particularly those related to GEPT, available on campus. You need to collect at least one stamp on “進行英檢測驗模擬試題” on the VOD passport. Please turn in your answer sheet (available at the counter of the Self-study Center) along with your VOD passport. Remind the staff to record your study time on the passport. The instructor will collect the VOD passport in week 17. It is a requirement for students to complete 3 online GEPT practice tests (http://140.113.9.12:800/) by week 16. In addition, one paper and pencil practice test will be given in class. The Read and Talk project asks the students to read an artifact, article or book of your own choice and orally share your response to the selected reading material. Detail instruction will be provided in class.
