Freshman English II is an integrated 4-skill (listening, speaking, reading, & writing) language curriculum with a focus on reading and writing. This course will address reading and paragraph writing while supporting the communicative skills addressed in the first semester. In this course, students will: 1 Develop critical reading skills, 2 Engage in reflection on readings, 3 Apply insights gained from readings, 4 Orally paraphrase and summarize texts, and reflect on the texts in oral discussion, 5 Write complete paragraphs with topic sentences, relevant supporting details, transition words, and concluding sentences, 6 Continue to develop listening and speaking skills.
1. Attendance, in-class discussion, and in-class participation: 20% You’re required to actively participate in weekly in-class discussion. Please finish the assigned tasks (see course schedule distributed by the teacher in week 1) before you come to the class. Attendance will be taken in the beginning of every class so please be on time. Two points will be deducted from your final grade for each unexcused absence. A valid proof is required for excused absences (e.g., being sick or attending conferences). Absence from class cannot be an excuse for missing important announcements or late assignments. If you are absent, it is your responsibility to find out what you have missed (e.g., check E3 or get notes & handouts from peers). 2. Midterm & Final Exams: 40% There will be an in-class midterm and an in-class final exam. If you need to reschedule an exam date, you need to present a valid proof and inform me at least one week in advance. Otherwise, no make-up exams will be given. 3. Required writing assignments: 10% You will write 2 paragraph assignments, a minimum of 200 words each. No late assignments will be accepted. 4. GEPT related works: 15% You will do one in-class GEPT practice test and 4 online practice tests. You also need to collect at least 10 stamps from the self-study center. You will hand in your VOD passport during the final week. 5. In-Class Quizzes: 5% Three in-class quizzes will be given this semester. No make-up exam will be given unless you present a valid proof to excuse your absence. 6. Out-of-class listening assignments: 5% You will engage in out-of-class listening activities throughout the semester. Details will be given in class. 7. Final project presentation: 5% You will work on the project in a group of 3 students. Please see course handout on E3 for more details. 8. Academic Integrity All students are expected to adhere to the University policy concerning academic integrity. Cheating on the exam or other required activities will result in the failure of this course.
