This course aims to advance students' listening and speaking skills. Students will develop listening skills through more complex and authentic listening materials on a wide variety of topics taken from film, television, modern music, podcasts, and news media such as the BBC online. Students will then further develop speaking skills through the discussion stemming from these listening resources and other topic related oral presentations. Topics discussed will cover a wide range of fields including the environment, business, technology, entertainment and world news. By the end of this course students will learn to: 1. Lead and participate in discussions to practice linguistic objectives and effective communication techniques 2. Deliver oral presentations of varied style and genre 3. Comprehend listening materials which cover more specialized and sophisticated topics 4. Identify and analyze points of view, arguments. or implicit information in the listening material
Students should be aware that attendance is mandatory for all parts of the course. Final grades will be calculated upon the following: Participation (10%) Oral presentations / performances (40%) (Weeks 4, 7, 12, 17) Mid-term and final examination (40%) Self-study (10%) Students will be expected to attend at least two sessions of "English Tables" before week 9 of the semester. Students are also required to produce one 2-minute YouTube video in English every week of the semester (18 videos is total) and upload the link to the class Google Sheet. Due to the current, topical and varied nature of the course content there is no set text for the course. However, authentic audio and video articles acting as the basis for presentation and discussion will be chosen from various media sources and online resources.
