This course aims to improve your English reading and writing skills simultaneously by (1) reading and writing extensively for pleasure and for knowledge and (2) reading and writing intensively for mastering academic writing conventions. Through activities designed for you to engage in reading and writing in and out of class via multiple modes of learning (e.g. online, face-to-face, formal, informal), this course aims not only to improve your English reading and writing abilities over the semester but also to instill a love for English and cultivate learning habits that you can carry after the course ends. In addition, through reading and writing on a variety of thought-provoking topics, you will learn to use English as a tool to broaden your knowledge, appreciate different cultures, and think critically and independently
VERY IMPORTANT! Students who wish to take this course MUST attend the first day of class. Those who register but miss the first class will be dropped from the class. (The first class meeting will be focusing on the philosophy behind the design of this course and the building of a learning community, both of which are key to the success of this class.)
Attendance and participation (20% of final grade) Writing Portfolio (40 % of final grade): Writing Portfolio will include all the role sheets and all the writing activities in class as well as assignments about academic research paper writing. A final one-page reflection about reading and writing needs to be included at the end of the portfolio. Reading Circles Discussions (40% of final grade): You will belong to a reading circle; together your circle picks 2-3 book-length text (novels, non-fiction) to read over the semester (Suggestions for book selection will be given). The group members decide on the schedule of reading. After the group is formed and book selected, we will devote a portion of each class to reading circles discussions. Each of the group members will assume a role (e.g. Summarizer, Discussion Facilitator, Connector, Word Master, Illustrator, etc.) for each discussion and you will need to have played every role before the semester ends.
