This course aims to improve your English through reading, sharing, and discussing a variety of texts, including print, digital, fiction, and non-fiction. The course is composed of (1) out-of-class extensive readings and in-class sharing and discussion (2) in-class intensive reading and discussion. Through an assortment of activities, you will learn to --cultivate a habit of reading in English for pleasure and for knowledge --share your stories, ideas, and opinions in English --appreciate diversity and different cultures --think critically and independently.
VERY IMPORTANT! Students who wish to take this course MUST attend the first day of class. Those who register but miss the first class will be dropped from the class. (The first class meeting will be focusing on the philosophy behind the design of this course and the building of a learning community, both of which are key to the success of this class.)
All class announcement, supplementary materials, communication, and collaboration will be offered and conducted on New e3.
Extensive reading: literature circle role sheet and in-class discussion: 30% In-class intensive reading and discussion: 30% PPT presentation of new research findings of a group-selected topic: 25% Final presentation: 15%

Reading materials will be made available on New e3. Book-length readings will be made available through the English teaching and Research Center or purchased after the literature circle groups decide on the books they want to read.
