This course aims to develop students' ability to write academic essays of one to several paragraphs, including introduction, body, and conclusion. Using process writing techniques, students will learn to generating ideas, using library/Internet resources, outlining, drafting, and revising. In addition, a variety of sentence structures that frequently used in academic English genre will be highlighted through weekly mini grammar lessons. Upon successful completion of this course, students will demonstrate competency in: a) reading college level academic texts and identifying the writing structures embedded in these texts, b)using process techniques to write multi-paragraph essays and developing a single idea with good organization and appropriate support, c) writing different kinds of academic essays, including process essays, cause/effect essays and comparison/contrast essays, d) using correct grammar, appropriate vocabulary, and a variety of sentence structures to communicate ideas effectively in English writing.
Basic understanding of English grammars, reading, and writing. Students who wish to take this course must be present on the first day of class; otherwise, you will be removed from the class list in order to open the space for those in the waiting list.
Students should come to the class with the assigned readings and homework assignments completed and are expected to actively participate in class time activities. To receive full credit, students must arrive to class on time and participate for the full session. Only 3 excused absences are allowed. If you are absent for more than 3 class sessions, you will lose all of the grades distributed to class time participation (15%). Notify the instructor if you will be unable to participate. Mastery in vocabulary and sentence structures is the foundation of English writing. In addition to learning about characteristics of good writing, the course will also work on expanding your vocabulary, sentence structures, and mechanics. The midterm and final exam will assess your mastery of the vocabulary and grammatical structures we cover in the class. There are two writing assignments throughout the semester. All of the writing assignments should be typed as MicroSoft Word documents in double-spaced format. Make sure you grammar check and self edit your writing assignments before submitting them. The writing tests give you an opportunity to practice impromptu writing and learn to manage your time throughout the writing process. Academic Integrity All students are expected to adhere to the University policy concerning academic integrity. Cheating on the exam or other required activities will result in the failure of this course.
