The Intended learning objectives (ILOs) are (1) to develop students’ understanding of the applications, the fundamental mechanical behavior, and the thermodynamics of the metals; (2) to inspire the students thinking, there will be groups for in-class quizzes using Zuvio; (3) there will be reading assignments for students to prepare for their in-class discussion; (4) the class will be recorded for students’ review ; (5) to assess students’ performance, there will be two types of the evaluation: (5-1) exams for individual learning review and (5-2) literature review for students’ group learning, which is also the major outcome that this class wants to build students’ literature reading for their advanced study. The central point of this course is to provide a physical basis that links the structure of metals with their properties. With this understanding in hand, the concepts of alloy applications and microstructural engineering are also discussed, linking processing and thermodynamics to the structure and properties of metals. The focus of the metal materials is the fundamental of phase transformations in metals and alloys.
