This course provides an introduction to fundamental concepts in modern linguistics with emphasis on linguistic analysis. The textbook provides a thorough survey of topics in core areas of contemporary linguistics. Some of the questions we will consider are: Why are children better language learners than adults? How do human languages differ? Are some languages or dialects better than others? Lectures and review sections will further develop selected topics of importance. Classroom work will emphasize the development of the ability to apply linguistic principles to the analysis of data drawn from a variety of languages.
- Homework assignments: You are encouraged to discuss homework with your classmates, but you must write up the answers on your own. All assignments must be your own. Homework is to be handed in at the beginning of the day it is due. No late homework will be accepted. If you cannot come to class, you should email your homework to the instructor or TAs before the class begins. Each homework assignment is worth 5 points and will be graded according to the following scale: 0 not handed in 1 handed in but completely off the point 2 only partially completed/understood 3 acceptable 4 good 5 excellent IV. Reviews and exams - There will be recitation sections held by the TAs, two reviews (a.k.a. exams) and occasional quizzes this semester to help you learn the course materials. - No make-up reviews will be given. - There will be a cumulative final exam. Attendance and participation (including in-class practice and quizzes): 15% Weekly homework assignments: 40% (10 assignments * 4%) 2 Reviews: 30% (2 reviews * 15%) (Cumulative) final exam: 15% Extra credits: 4pt (Conferences and Brownbag talks)
