General Information 1. Course purpose. The class seeks to train students’ English communicative skills in the medical setting and negotiation skills in the business environment. Students will also be aurally trained by listening to various news programs in English. 2. Class attendance is mandatory. English is the only language used in class. 3. Turn your cellular phone into the flight mode. No texting, call answering, checking with the devices, taping, recording, podcasting, or photo-taking is allowed in the classroom during class sessions or the breaks. 4. No food and beverage, except drinking water, are allowed in class. 5. Class participation: you will be graded for your performance in each class session according to how well you have learned from the class. This grade will be released to you by midterm and updated before the final. 6. There are midterm and final examinations. They may take both the oral and written forms in English. Further details will be given before the exams. 7. Internet activities and course grades will be posted at the E-campus site (see above). To log in, use the user’s ID and password you use for logging in at the NCTU Online Course Registration System (https://course.nctu.edu.tw/). 8. All future course-related announcements will be sent to you via your e-mail address on file at e-Campus and Course Registration. Keep good maintenance of your mailbox and check your mails regularly. 9. Rights. The instructor reserves the final and exclusive rights to amend any portion of the course schedule, regulations, and instructions on assignments and examinations. Official Leave 1. If you should be absent from class, you must obtain an official leave of absence. To do so, visit “Student’s Leave Application” at https://stuoffcourse.nctu.edu.tw/. 2. If your leave is granted, you are considered present. You will also receive, by the semester’s end, the semester’s average quiz grade as the credit of your missing quiz. 3. If you should be absent without a leave for four times (inclusive), you will not be allowed to take the final exam. Weekly Quizzes 1. Preparations. There will be 14 weekly quizzes throughout the semester, each of which will be on a. the weekly assigned speech(es) from English Speeches in Focus (noted as In Focus in the class schedule below), b. NBC Nightly News 2. English Speeches in Focus: a. Students are urged to have read and listened to the assigned piece(s) before class. b. The book is subdivided into parts I and II. The speech noted as In Focus II: 20 below, for instance, means speech no. 20 in part II of the book. 3. The news podcasts: a. These are the NBC Nightly News podcasts aired in 2014-2015. b. Each week’s podcast will be available for download at our e-Campus page, where the podcasts will be updated weekly. 4. Grading guidelines. Each weekly quiz will have 10 as the highest score, 1 as the lowest; 0 means that you have been absent from class without a granted leave. This is how the quiz and the grading process proceed: a. Write down on a piece of paper your Chinese name, your ID number, and the week number (e.g., Week 5). b. 12 questions will be read to you to answer, evenly divided between two sections: with 6 on the In Focus piece(s) and the other 6 on the news podcast. c. You can only bring in your notes on the podcast, not those on In Focus. d. Make your answers to the questions as short as possible. e. If your score exceeds 10, the quiz grade for the week remains as 10. 5. Further grading matters: a. You will be considered present for the first three (3) leaves to receive an average quiz grade for the quizzes you have missed, after which each quiz you miss will be graded as 1.0 with a leave, or as 0 without one. b. Quiz grades, as well as other grades, will be updated at a regular basis at our e-Campus site. If you suspect an error in your grades posted there, send your query to the teaching assistant. In your e-mail, always note clearly your full name in Chinese and your student’s I.D. c. For each leave that you are granted, you are considered present. If you have full attendance the whole semester, you will get a 5% extra grade for your overall semester grade. For example, if your grade is 80, it will be increased to 84. If, however, after the adjustment your grade exceeds 85, you receive 85.
