In this course, we will study the masterpieces of contemporary European and American drama. Through analyses on plot, theme, characters, settings and dialogues, we can explore how the playwrights and directors represent love, marriage, and gender relationship in modern society; how they explore the social problems, family issues and individual thinking and desire in the intersection among class, race, and gender. Contextualizing these plays, we will also discuss the construction of gender, sexuality and identity along the axes of nationalism, capitalism and colonialism. Furthermore, we will investigate how these masterpieces impinge impact on their successors with their unique style, theatrical politics and aesthetics.
