To determine the fundamental geodetic reference system is the principal task of geodesy, which has to be carefully established on the features of the earth so that all the follow on scientific or engineering mission based on this frame can achieve best association with the nature. One of the primary features, the figure of the earth, has to be represented by an equipotential surface and the associated gravity field. This is the background why the study of gravity field, play such a key role in geodesy and eventually being dubbed the term, physical geodesy. It provides the datum for reference system, which covers the scope from local height systems to satellite orbits; its effect rigs various geodetic surveying instruments, from traditional leveler to cutting edge inertial navigation system.
