Course Description This course explores the use of statistical methods as analytical tools for understanding and analyzing business problems and for supporting business decision-making. You will be taught how to compute statistics using a hand calculator and Excel. However, this course will emphasize decision-making based on statistics. That is, when faced with a problem or question you must know which procedure to use, must be able to use it correctly, must be able to draw the correct conclusions from the results, and must be able to report the results accurately and clearly. Objectives/Goals Students in this course shall: ■ Understand statistical methods useful for analyzing data, with specific application to problems of business and economics ■ Understanding of uncertainty and risk management (e.g., probability theory, covariance, portfolio risk), estimation and forecasting (e.g., demand analysis, sensitivity analysis, simulation), optimization (e.g., portfolio choice under risk aversion), and the logic of statistical inference ■ Learn how to use statistics to think critically about real world issues ■ Apply quantitative tools for the areas of marketing, financial and managerial accounting, corporate finance, and applied operational methods. Students will learn to use R and EXCEL for statistical analysis.
