This course provides a broad introduction to science fiction studies, focusing primarily on film cultures and critical readings of films. When films are based on works of science fiction literature, reference to these works of fiction may be made, yet close reading of these text remains beyond the focus of this course. This course aims to prepare students for conducting further research in this subfield of film studies and cultural studies, which can include media studies, communications, discourse analysis (for instance of fan cultures and social media phenomena), and ethical and political philosophical interrogations, and questions regarding the relation of science to science fiction film, one of the most popular genres today. Students from the creative arts or with appropriate skill sets may opt to write a sf-themed script for a TV pilot and then film a demo/rough-cut of your pilot in lieu of a final research paper. Students in music may produce a sf-themed libretto and put it to music for their final project.
No prerequisites.
Seminar (dialogue, student presentations, lecture, discussion). Critique critical essays. Preview/discuss film and TV series clips.
Grading Criteria Contribution to class discussion and leading discussion on selected assigned readings: 25% Presentation on original topic: 25% Final paper (may be developed from presentation) or creative project: 50% Attendance: -2 from final grade for each unexcused absence.
