• Participation 1. In-class presentations (10%): class presentation of two articles of students’ choice throughout the semester (preferably one from the readings in the weeks of 3-6 and another from the readings in the weeks of 11-15). 2. Discussion on E3 (8%): Everyone posts two questions/comments for the point article in the online discussion forum in E3 by 10pm Thursday. 3. NCTU sound workshop and Ph-Brown Bag meeting (4%): we will hold NCL (National Conference on Linguistics) and Phone Brown Bag meetings spread across the semester. Unless you have other time constraints, your attendance to these meetings is be mandatory. • Weekly homework assignment (40%, 8 assignments*5%) 1. One page summary of the point paper of the week, including Purpose – Method – Results – Conclusion. There is a recommended format for the summary (see slides for more details). 2. One page review of the core linguistic terminology used in the article. Grading rubric: 0 not handed in 1 handed in but completely off the point 2 partially completed/understood 3 acceptable 4 good 5 excellent Due: Thurs 10pm (upload your homework assignment in pdf to E3) • Midterm (13%) Questions about linguistic terminology used in the articles & possibly some other questions • Final project (25%) A final paper that identifies a research question in phonetics/phonology and designs an experiment to test some hypothesis related to the question, and an in-class presentation of the problem/experiment on the last day of class.
