This course has two main goals: [1] to provide students with an intensive introduction to recent work in syntactic theory especially focusing on Chinese syntax. [2] to equip students with the necessary mindset and fundamental skill set to take on their own research project.
Introduction to Linguistics I & II Undergrad Introduction to Syntax
The weeks on the syllabus are idealized chunks of time. Not all have the same absolute duration. We will be somewhat flexible. Your term paper is due on 1/13 (to be submitted on e3).
Your final grade will be the cumulative result of the following: 10%: Quiz in the first class on Ch.1 in HLL 20%: Weekly summary of designated readings (from week 2 - week 16; to be submitted on e3) 35%: Presentation - The first chapter in HLL will be presented by the instructor. - The presentations of the other 22 readings are evenly distributed to the students. - The presenters are responsible for printing the handouts for the class. 35%: Term paper - Your grade will be jointly determined by the presentation and the paper itself.
