This course introduces graduate students to theories, research, and pedagogy in English for Specific Purposes (ESP). ESP is defined as “the teaching and learning of English as a second or foreign language where the goal of the learners is to use English in a particular domain” (Paltridge & Starfield, 2013, p. 2). The content and aims of an ESP course thus center around the language, skills, and specialist discourse required for the specific activities that learners need to perform in English. In this course, the students will be introduced to the growing and exciting field of ESP and be informed by ESP research and scholarship. The students are then encouraged to recognize the insights obtained from reading ESP research and apply them to course projects as well as future ESP teaching and course design. Class meetings will be a combination of lectures, discussion, group activities, ESP case studies, and presentations, etc. Throughout the semester, the students are expected to (1) show active class participation, (2) constantly reflect on their learning about ESP in class or online, and (3) apply what they have learned to make connections with current and future ESP teaching contexts. Upon completion of this course students will be able to: 1. Demonstrate knowledge of pertinent ESP theories and research and assess their applicability to different ESP contexts; 2. Identify learner needs and perform linguistic, genre, and discourse analysis to develop an ESP course or program; 3. Evaluate online and offline ESP courses, materials, or resources and use these resources effectively to support their ESP course development; 4. Apply what they have learned to design and implement an ESP project, and evaluate learning outcomes, and finally 5. Demonstrate a reflective attitude toward their own learning and teaching processes.
