In the past decades, digital games in a wide range of types and genres have been developed and have drawn much attention not only in entertainment but also in social, professional, and educational domains (Reinhardt & Sykes, 2014). The ludic engagement in digital gameplay also demonstrates great potential in second language teaching and learning (Reinhardt & Thorne, 2016). This course aims to explore various genres and types of digital games, discuss their pedagogical affordance, review related research, and design game-based language learning activities or research. By the end of this course, students are expected to be able to 1. define, explain, and identify the difference among the three main approaches to digital games in second language teaching and learning (L2TL) (game-informed, game-enhanced, and game-based L2TL); 2. name related theories explaining or sustaining digital games in L2TL 3. explore various genres of digital games both via computers and via mobile devices; 4. evaluate the affordance of selected digital games for L2TL; 5. design effective game-based class activities; and/or 6. design digital game-related research.
