你知道嗎,只要了解基本架構,學術英語文章其實比你想像中的好讀? 你知道嗎,英語世界有大量有趣又有深度的人文廣播節目,讓你可以ㄧ邊通勤、運動,或吃飯,ㄧ邊了解最夯的人文社會議題? 你知道嗎,網路世界還有很多深入淺出的紀錄片,讓你可以一邊看影片一邊升級英語力與批判思考能力? 這堂專門為人文社會科系學生設計的『學術英文課』,並不是GRE字彙填鴨班或出國保證班。老師將採用輕鬆的學習方式與媒介,帶你接觸「人文社會學術英語」的世界。整體課程設計將以加強你的英文閱讀與聽力為主,口語表達及寫作能力為輔。教材選用人文社會學科的學術文章,以及具人文深度的廣播節目,另搭配部分TED-TALK 演講與 youtube 學術演講影片。透過小班學習的密集解說與師生互動,學生將可初步熟悉學術英語的基本架構、文法與常用單字與片語,接觸英語世界裡的人文思維與表達習慣,並且嘗試練習學術會議發表與自我表達。這堂課適合有興趣出國當交換生或背包客,以及有志於就讀人文社會學科研究所的同學來試試,但也歡迎想要go beyond網路速成知識,希望以更有效率的方式接觸歐美人文思想的同學一起來學習。 This course is designed for those of you who wish to improve your English proficiency in academic setting. It’s a hands-on class, which means it’s a LEARNING BY DOING class. It’s reading- and listening- intensive, and it requires preparation, discussion, class interaction, and mutual-collaboration among all class participants. Through reading and listening assignments, peer reviews, and writing consultation, by the end of the class, students should be able to: -- know how to read and analyze a research article in humanities and social sciences studies. -- know how to deliver your thoughts in plain and simple English. -- know how to give and take constructive criticism with your peers. -- improve your listening and critical thinking skills. -- become more familiar with the vocabulary, sentence structures, and other writing conventions of humanities and social sciences English. * 注意!由於9/12 教師仍在阿根廷進行田野工作,本課程將於9/19 第一次上課 (first class meeting will be held on Sep/19)
Attendance and class participation (20%) : As a seminar, this class requires your attendance and engaged participation. Everyone is allowed two free, no-questions-asked absences during the semester. Each subsequent absence will negatively affect your participation grade. You are responsible for bringing the readings with you to class. This is an unwired seminar; laptops are only allowed for note-taking. other electronic devices and internet aren’t allowed in class. Those who miss more than 5 classes (1⁄3 of semester) will be dropped from the class. 2. Weekly assignments (10%x8 = 80%) Students will be required to work on 8 different assignments in 8 different weeks. The assignments are due on the day of class in designated format. No late paper will be accepted. Each assignment is 10% of your final grade.
