Participate: Learning is a social act and can be best achieved within a community of learners (this class) through engaging, collaborative, and participatory class discussions. Each student is expected to engage in the assigned readings carefully, actively, and critically and come prepared to be an active participant of class discussions. Your individual contributions and serious participation in class activities benefit the entire community of learners (the class). Be an independent learner: You and you alone are responsible for your learning (not the instructor), and you also have an impact on the learning of others. Just going through the motions of completing course assignments at the bare minimum level of effort is not the type of academic work that earns a good grade. Attend all classes: Our class meets only once a week. The types and content of the activities and discussions that take place in the classroom cannot be accessed outside of class; therefore, attendance is essential. Attendance will be taken every day in the first five minutes of class, so be punctual. Unreasonably high unexcused absenteeism or chronic tardiness denotes a casual, less than professional attitude and a lack of commitment towards learning. However, we are all human so 3 unexcused absences are allowed per semester. More than 3 unexcused absences will lead to failure of this course. Take note that your unexcused absences will still reflect towards your attendance grade. Late work is not accepted. If you feel you might have difficulty turning in any assignments, please contact me as soon as possible before the due date. Cheating is NOT tolerated and will result in the failure of the course. Since our course schedule is tentative, I reserve the right to adjust the course schedule and due dates as necessary due to unforeseeable circumstances. Please be advised that you are responsible for keeping track of, and complying with, any changes to the schedule and/or the assignment deadlines. I. Attendance 10% II. Participation 15% Includes quizzes, in-class activities, homework, and impromptu speaking The more you participate, the higher your score will be. III. VOD Passport 語言學習護照 5% Students must go to the Library 3F Language Center to practice GEPT practice tests or study English related materials. You will get one stamp on your passport after spending 30 minutes in the center. By the end of the semester, you need to have 10 stamps. Mind that you can only get one stamp per day. English Tables can also count as one stamp. IV. GEPT after-class activities 10% URL: http://140.113.9.17/ ( 學生帳號及密碼 : 學號 ) If you have log in problems, please contact: Echo Wang ext. 52761. Freshman English (I): 新版1-4 Freshman English (II): 新版5-7 You will do 1 in-class practice test and 4 new online GEPT practice tests (test: 1, 2, 3, and 4). You have the entire semester to pace yourself and finish these three online tests. You will receive scores for the amount of tests you do. For example, if you do all four tests, you will receive 4/4, if you only do two tests, you will receive 2/4. Then this score will be averaged with a GEPT exam you will take in class in the semester. The average score will be your GEPT total score which will take up 10% of your total grade. *Having “computer or log in problems” cannot be an excuse for incomplete tests. Please start doing the tests early; DO NOT wait until the deadline is around the corner! V. Required writing assignment 5% (a passage of 170-200 words) You will watch a video and write a passage on that video. Students will be taught how to write a short passage that contains a topic sentence and supporting details. Please follow the structure taught in class to obtain full score for this assignment. VI. Midterm Listening Exam 25% This will be a listening exam based on the content covered before the midterm. VII. Final Exam Group Role Play Presentation 30% Students will form groups of 3 (with a 30 student classroom, there will be 10 groups). Each group needs to write a 10 minute role play conversation on any of the topics related to our textbook. Students must use key vocabulary and phrases learned in class (at least 20 vocabularies or phrases that will be checked by the teacher). Then students will rehearse and perform their act in front of the classroom. The goal is to try to review the content learned and make the conversation as natural and smooth as possible.
