Freshman English I is an integrated course designed to develop students’ four English skills (listening, speaking, reading, & writing) with an emphasis on speaking and listening. In this course, students will: Identify listening problems and develop listening strategies and skills, Gain confidence in speaking and improve speaking fluency, pronunciation, and conversation strategies, Develop general reading skills, including word skills and comprehension strategies, Develop writing fluency by giving students opportunities to articulate ideas in short writings of approximately 170-200 words. For example, students can respond to topics addressed in class through writing assignments that focus on content and expression of ideas, rather than the structure of the written English. Other practical examples could include emails, note-taking, letter writing or comments.
Attendance: 10% Midterm and final exams: 40% Required writing assignment: 5% (a passage of 170-200 words) Language enhancement activities: 15%, including GEPT practice tests (5%, 1 in-class and 1 online), and 10 self-study stamps in VOD passport (10%). Other: 30%, including in-class assignments (5%), speaking (10%), supplementary reading and listening worksheets (15%)
