This course aims to familiarize students with several vital elements in academic writing. Over the course, we will learn how to summarize a reading, how to quote passages, how to respond to others' arguments, how to use transition words, how to come up with sound arguments, how to avoid some common mistakes in writing, and so on. Before we tackle major assignments along the way, we will focus on various aspects of an argumentative essay to pick up important writing techniques. Students will emerge from this class with an understanding of how to write and analyze academic papers.

Attendance You have to sign up for your attendance each week. Whenever you miss one hour of class, I will dock 2 points (out of 10). If you are late for more than ten minutes, you are considered absent that hour. If you have to miss classes for legitimate reasons, please let me know in advance/in person. A doctor's note must come with your sick leave. I will not count your legitimate leaves as absences unless there are more than THREE times. If you miss more than three classes (even for legitimate reasons), those absences will more or less affect your final score. If you are on personal leave, you are not entitled to any exemption. Quizzes Whenever we finish our weekly readings, we will look at some problematic sentences. We will learn how to revise those problematic sentences together. In quizzes, you will need to correct similar sentences. Homework To practice those writing skills from TSIS, we will discuss your homework in weeks 3 and 5. After you finish your homework, email me your draft at least 12 hours before class, print out your draft, and bring it to class. After our discussion, you will have the chance to revise your homework in class (handwriting). Pay attention to how and why you revise particular passages. Workshops We will have in-class outline workshops and online draft workshops for your major assignments this term. Please bring your outlines for your major assignments to class. We will discuss the readings and your outlines to make it easier to complete your major assignments. Once you finish your first draft, please upload your draft on New E3 at least 48 hours before our scheduled workshop dates. Your draft needs to be at least two-thirds of the required length. When you upload your draft in an attached WORD file, you are highly encouraged to ask me questions about your draft. Make sure that your draft follows MLA style. You could see the required format in the very beginning of the file "Major Assignments." Please also name your attached WORD documents in this format: Your Chinese Name, First (or Second) Draft for Major Assignment 01 (or 02). This will help me organize your documents. Unless you ask me to focus on something else, I will edit your first paragraph and comment on the current draft as a whole in the first week of each draft workshop. If necessary, we will go for another session of draft editing in the following week. You may also email me back if you have more questions about your draft.
