Transformation is a recurring theme in literature and public culture. A high school student could turn into a woman warrior. A man could turn into woman, or a woman could turn into a man. A human being could turn into a nonhuman animal, a plant, a monster, or a robot. A ghost or spirit could turn into a human being or an immortal. An aged person could be rejuvenated, or a youth could age overnight. And a resident alien could turn into a citizen. Transformation might also take the form of possession, body swapping, and so on. In these seemingly fantastic works, we may notice the imagination of, realization of, or anxiety about the blurred boundaries between the human and the nonhuman, between the natural and the unnatural, between the male and the female, and/or between the self and the other. This course highlights a few literary works and some relevant theoretical readings, aiming to address keywords like human, nature, and gender in literary and cultural studies from transgender, transspecies, and transhuman perspectives. Throughout this term, we will reexamine the emphasis on interspecies differences and the omission of intraspecies difference in taxonomy. At the same time, we will embark on a series of trans studies in response to current scientific, technological, and medical developments.

Participation If you have to miss classes for legitimate reasons (official or sick leave), please let me know in advance/in person. A doctor’s note must come with your sick leave. I will not count your legitimate leaves as absences unless there are more than THREE times. If you miss more than three classes (even for legitimate reasons), those absences will more or less affect your final score. In class, I will call on people at random after my lecture. You should come to class with a couple of questions or observations. Oral Report Whenever we have readings, you may volunteer to discuss the text(s) in 15-20 minutes. Please choose some quotes from our assigned text(s) and group them in terms of a certain topic or theme. Share your observations and raise questions for class discussion. Unless you report in a careless manner, you may expect to obtain 90-100 points (out of 100) for your one-time report. Alternative If you are interested in applying for the graduate school, you are encouraged to turn in a final paper (50%) in English instead. The final paper will replace the final review and oral report, and it could be on any of our four primary texts. Word count: 1500-2000 words.
