漢語音韻學

In this course, we will look into the phonological systems of Chinese, focusing on Taiwan Mandarin, including its consonants and vowels, and supra-segmental properties (e.g., tones, intonation). We will examine the phonological processes such as syllable contractions and tone sandhi, and consider extra-linguistic factors, such as age and dialectal background in affecting these processes. We will also read recent research papers on the above topics.

Introduction to Linguistics I Phonetics & Phonology

- Readings: students will be expected to do the readings (generally from the textbook or posted on e3) and participate in class discussion, including leading discussion of at least one reading. - To ensure that everyone has done the readings before coming to the class, you are required to ask at least 1 question about the readings. Please post the question(s) on e3 on the Tuesday before each class. - Exercise (2-5 questions per week): You are encouraged to discuss homework problems with your classmates, but you must write up the solution on your own. ALL homework assignments must be your own. - Occasional quizzes - Three exams
