This course covers topics in speech perception. We will start by reviewing the basic acoustic properties of speech sounds and move onto topics in speech perception including social factors in speech perception, phonetic categorization, linguistic experience, tone perception, etc. While familiarizing students with current theories in speech perception, students will have a chance to have firsthand experience with perceptual experiments. The instructor will suggest possible topics and provide speech materials for small-scale experiments and students will design and run experiments with hands-on guidance from course TAs. -tentative schedule- wk1: Introduction, logistics wk2-4: Acoustic phonetics wk5-7: Social factors in speech production and perception wk9-10: Project discussion; project design and planning wk11-13: Phonetic categorization, L2 speech perception wk15-16: Tone perception wk17: Project presentation
