This course is designed to introduce students to the basic concepts of social network analysis (SNA) and help students understand how SNA can apply to unravel different types of social phenomena, ranging from interpersonal relationships, community development, digital media and social mobilization, organizational relationships, and public communication campaigns. Students will learn network theory and empirical research, as well as gain hands-on experience in the form of performing social network analysis experiments. In particular, students will be assigned to complete two mini-projects, which require them to replicate the seminal “small world” experiment, and to perform a mock communication audit with an organization through social network analysis. The course will culminate in the design and execution of a communication campaign on new media platforms and assess the information flow and effectiveness of the campaign. By the end of the semester: 1. Students should be able to exhibit correct and comprehensive knowledge about the fundamental concepts of social network analysis; 2. Students should be able to articulate the applicability of social network analysis in different domains of human life; 3. Students will acquire basic skills to collect and analyze social network data; 4. Students will develop the habit of employing a network view of observing and understanding social phenomena and human behaviors.
No prerequisite
The course will be conducted in the form of lectures, coupled with in-class exercises, homework assignments, and the final group project. Two lab sessions will be conducted to help students learn how to use social network analysis tools (e.g., Gephi) to perform basic network analysis.
