The central aim of this course is to teach students how to be critical thinkers. Students will learn how to: construct arguments, identify particular strengths and weaknesses of arguments, use various scientific reasoning skills (e.g., hypothesis testing, causal inference), evaluate definitions, and identify kinds of ambiguity. This course involves a group project called the Box Project, which serves as an opportunity for students to practice various scientific reasoning skills. Students have access to a small cardboard box that contains a number of objects. The Box Project is characterized by one question (‘What is in the box?’) and one rule (‘You may not open the box.’). Students work in small groups over the course of a month to answer this question.
