This course offers a survey of research on judgment and decision-making in consumer behavior. There is an emphasis placed on information processing. The focus is on individual-level phenomena, however there may be some applicability to group-level decision-making. Ultimately, there are two goals: 1. To review some of the key literature in this domain. 2. To explore opportunities for research within this domain. Although methodology issues are important in research, they will not be explicitly examined, beyond the consideration of potential research design. However, it is expected that through the course of the reading, an understanding of the methodological issues associated with behavioral research will develop, in conjunction with conceptual understanding.
4. Pedagogy and other supplementary information (websites, TAs, handouts and/or databases): TurnItIn.com for paper submissions. Course documents (syllabus, grading rubrics, etc.) will be available online (website TBA) Required and optional readings will be available online (website TBA) Electronic journal databases and/or Google Scholar will be used for the Final Paper.
1. Homework and Assignments: The major goal of this course is to review various aspects of consumer behavior research with enough depth so that students are able to develop the conceptual background to develop their own research projects. As such, a major portion of the final grade is the final paper and presentation. The expectation is that students will develop and write a paper that would be suitable as the front end of submission to a high-level academic journal. Papers should have an introduction Students will also be evaluated on class participation, with the expectation that students participate both with formal presentations, as well as in informal discussions in class. Students will be assigned discussion leadership roles throughout the semester that will include academic-conference-style presentations of research. All students are expected to actively participate in discussions on content topics each week. Additionally, for each content topic, students will submit weekly, brief, 1-page research proposals that are intended to build on one of the topics from the required readings, creating a portfolio of potential research ideas for students moving forward. 2. Exams and Quizzes: Students will be responsible for 2 open-note, written exams that are meant to simulate short versions of Doctoral Qualifying Exams. Exams will require that students: 1) describe the core conceptual background of key topics covered in class, 2) propose relevant and important key research questions, and/or 3) propose relevant hypotheses and propose empirical studies to test these hypotheses. 3. Evaluation and Grading Policy: Exams – 25% Class Participation (including weekly research proposals) – 30% Final Paper – 35% Final Paper Poster Presentation – 10%
