The synchrotron radiation facilities world-wide have introduced many advanced research tools using photons with energy ranging from infrared to hard X-rays. The powers of synchrotrons as intense sources for spectroscopy and scattering studies are widely realized following important advancements in instrumentation and scientific discoveries since 1970s. In Taiwan, the first synchrotron machine, Taiwan Light Source (1.5 GeV), was commissioned in 1993 and the second machine, Taiwan Photon Source (3 GeV) will be in 2015. Recently, X-ray Free Electron Lasers have also become operational at SLAC, USA and at SPring-8, Japan. New interests for advanced research have been created at these facilities. The course is designed to introduce these new experimental facilities and discuss the emerging scientific opportunities not possible before. The course is planned to include such topics as angle-resolved photoelectron spectroscopy, X-ray absorption spectroscopy, nano-scale imaging, and nano X-ray crystallography in applications to the research of electronic structure of highly correlated electron systems and nano materials of current interests. Senior synchrotron scientists from Max Plank Institute, Academia Sinica, NSRRC as well as NCTU are invited to give lectures of current interests. The course is intended to be highly interactive and free of discussions among students and lecturers.
The course is designed for senior and graduate students who have basic knowledge of solid state physics and introductory level of quantum physics or chemistry.
