概述

Macro-Strategic management (of technology) is a new academic discipline, entailing macro-strategic management about dynamic interactions between business (economy) and society (politics, culture, anthropology, diplomacy, and environment). The outbreak of catastrophic economic crisis in the later part of 2008 has demonstrated that the integrated world has an unprecedented power. Proliferation and spread of the crisis sends an alarming signal that the world is in a long-term recession. As the triumph of capitalism is in doubt, the flat world is broken. While the world financial institutions are seeking recipes for remedy and recovery, industrial sectors are struggling as well, for lack of market demands and financial resources for continual growth. As a result, stimulus packages focusing on investing in domestic infrastructure have become the prime government’s agenda, and the stream of globalization seems halting. Conventional wisdom stresses that strategic innovation is the critical engine for economic growth. Traditional courses of strategic management, however, offer firm-level strategic thinking in the competitive and analytical contexts. As the future prospects of world economy are in doubt, disparities in the distribution of world wealth and poverty force business leaders to re-consider the importance of macro-strategic issues, which are under the control of politicians and government of advanced nations. It is imperative, therefore, for business leaders of developing nations be equipped with adequate knowledge at both the macro- and micro-strategic levels to copy with future business environment to stay afloat. This course offers, at the macro-strategic level, important materials which have profound impacts on the world order and market structure. In addition, while struggling to understand and predict future developments of world economy, this course helps you think and act as a general manager of a company operating worldwide. This course attempts to give an integrated approach for strategic management at the macro level, with micro-level strategic management as complementarities. On the macro-level, it entails macroscopic perspectives of development of world economy. In particular, special emphasis is placed on the influences on economic developments of nations in different areas by economic (technological), political, and diplomatic maneuvering, and the resulting disparity in nations’ wealth and poverty is discussed from the historical perspectives. Global integration and regional segregation as a result of economic and political disparities, and its strategic implications on future business developments will be highlighted as well. On the micro-level, policy and national systems of innovation, and their impacts on the developments of nation’s technological base for economic growth will also be given. The key subjects are listed as follows:  Globalization & WTO (Globalization and its discontents, Making globalization work)  大國崛起之啟示 及熱力學觀點  Developments of technological economy (The commanding heights & Profits of science)  The new world order in knowledge-based economy (The Invisible continents, The next Global Stage, Supercapitalism)  National specialization during globalization (Sources of industrial leadership)  Policy impacts on economic development (The marketing of nations)
