This course is aimed at equipping students with critical methodologies and theories of psychoanalysis, feminisms, globalization, and cultural identity to analyze literary and visual texts. In addition, students will learn to contextualize literary and art works to investigate contemporary crucial issues such as subjectivity, gaze, desire, and power relations in the intersection of gender, nation, and race; to discuss the formation of cultural identities in the interstices of globalization and localization.
Introduction to Literary Studies
1. Class participation and discussion 2. Presentation: a. Oral Presentation: Please sign up a certain week and give a 25-minute English oral presentation. Your oral presentation could be a summary of or a critique on the main concepts of the assigned readings. Each student is supposed to conduct 2 oral presentations in this course. 3. 5 online responses (200 words/each response) to reading or visual assignments. Be specific and precise. Your responses are supposed to be posted on the forum of our course website. 4. 1 mid-term position Paper (4-6 pages): in the mid-term, you have to utilize one or two theories you have learned in this class to analyze a visual text or literary text. Pay attention to your citation. No plagiarism. 5. Final paper: Please turn in a final paper (8-10 pages) at the end of this semester. You are encouraged to demonstrate your abilities of critical thinking and textual analysis. You have to utilize one or two theories you have learned in this class. The subject of your final paper is flexible as long as it can reflect what you have learned from this course. If you are interested, you can propose and work out some joint project with your classmates. You can analyze or investigate literature, film, paintings, video, theater, performance. When you cite or quote, please cite accurately and give your sources honestly. Pay attention to your citation. No plagiarism.
Grading: Class participation and discussion: 10% Writing assignments: 5 online responses (200 words/each response) to reading or visual assignments, or critiques on literature or films. 10% Oral presentation: 20% Midterm paper (4-6 pages, double space): 20% Final paper (8-10 pages; double space): 40%
