Anyone wishing to understand the prosody of languages will face a number of challenges. What part of it is linguistic structure and what part is paralinguistic communication? Is intonation more like morphosyntax or more like phonology? How can you tell whether a language has stress? Why don’t people talk about ‘suprasegmental’ much anymore? What is the difference between tone and pitch accent? Why is there a conference series on Speech Prosody, but none on Speech Syntax? How can you hear prosodic things that descriptions tell you are there? What determines the foreignness of an L2 speaker’s pronunciation more, vowels and consonants or intonations and durations? This will be a seminar-like course, with a list of default topics and some flexibility of what additional topics are to be added. Students will be asked to present minimally one article from the literature in class.
Course assessment is on the basis of either a final exam or a personal course assignment, in consultation with the teacher.
