The aim of this course is to enhance students' critical English reading abilities and develop more formal discussion skills based on critical reading of and reference to source materials. In this class, students will read a variety of texts styles with enhanced fluency following coherent and effective use of reading strategies. Students will also actively engage in extensive reading with a critical perspective (e.g., distinguishing between fact and opinion, evaluating sources, and identifying points of view). Discussion skills will be practiced in a variety of formats including whole-class analysis of topical issues, problem-solving group work, or short individual oral presentations. A focus on pronunciation of key words and application of vocabulary or sentence structures presented in reading is recommended.

(1) Attendance and participation: To gain full points for attendance and participation, students must attend classes regularly and earn their participation points by orally volunteering their answers to questions, participating in any form of discussions, asking questions or making comments after listening to students' presentations. (2) Mid-term and Final exam: Students will be evaluated for the vocabulary and reading comprehension in related topics covered in class. (3) Reading sharing and discussion: By following the weekly topics and schedule, students review the reading articles in the textbook, and look for their own articles to share in class. Students will work as groups to carry on a simulated discussion or debate, expressing and exchanging their own opinions on the topical issues. (4) Group presentation: Students will also be grouped to further investigate one topic from our second-half (i.e. after the mid-term) course schedule by reading three self-selected articles as groups. Each group will make a ppt presentation, summarizing the self-selected articles, critically evaluating the opinions and assumptions made by different authors, expressing your opinions on the issue you have worked on, and lead a session of discussion for classmates. (5) Online discussion: At the end of the semester students should make 6-10 responses on the threads of e3 discussion board by expressing opinions, making comments, or exchanging ideas with classmates.
