The course is designed to advance students’ English reading skills and ability to analyze literary works through reading, in-class practices and discussion.
Requirements and Policies: 1. Active participation and regular class attendance are required. Being late for more than 20 minutes is regarded as being absent for that hour and will result in one point deduction. Being absent for 9 hours will automatically result in failing this course. If you have a legitimate reason AND an official proof, the instructor will take it into account. 2. Students are required to preview the textbook materials according to the syllabus and should be prepared to take related quizzes in class and also participate in discussion. 3. Each student is required to take one group presentation. 4. Plagiarism and cheating on exams are strictly prohibited and will NOT be tolerated. 5. All course-related announcements will be sent to your e-mail address on file at the e-campus website. Keep good maintenance of your mailbox and check your mails regularly. About Group Presentation: Each group is required to take one 20-25 minute oral presentation. Creativity and Knowledge will be the guideline of group presentation. Your group presentation should be a creative project related to (but not limited to) the weekly topic: it could be the multi-media presentation, short play, music concert, self-produced mini-video, debate, or poetry or fiction recital combined with singing and dancing.... Grading will be based on team work and group performance. About Midterm and Final Exams: The content of exams will be based on the textbook, including vocabulary, reading comprehension(plot, character, imagery, symbol, metaphor), literary terms, grammar, and essay questions.
Grading: Participation, discussion and in-class quizzes: 20% Group presentation: 20% Midterm exam: 30% Final exam: 30%
