概述

General Information 1. Course purpose. The class seeks to train students’ oral communicative skills in making a presentation and holding a meeting in the business setting in English. Students will also be aurally trained by listening to various programs in English so to be fully immersed in the English-speaking environment. 2. Class attendance is mandatory. English is the only language used in class. 3. Turn your cellular phone into the flight mode. No texting, call-answering, or checking with the devices is allowed in the classroom during class sessions or the breaks. 4. No food and beverage, except drinking water, are allowed in class. 5. Class participation. You will be graded for your performance in each class session according to how well you have learned from the class. This grade will be released weekly or bi-weekly, depending on the TA’s workload. 6. There are midterm and final examinations. They may take both the oral and written forms in English. Further details will be given before the exams. 7. Internet activities and course grades will be posted at the e-Campus site (see above). To log in, use the user’s ID and password you have for logging in at the NCTU Online Course Registration System (https://course.nctu.edu.tw/). 8. All future course-related announcements will be sent to you via your e-mail address on file at e-Campus and/or the Course Registration website. Keep good maintenance of your mailbox and check your mails regularly. 9. Rights. The instructor reserves the final and exclusive rights to amend any portion of the course syllabus, including the grading scale, course schedule, regulations, and instructions on assignments and examinations. Official Leave 1. If you should be absent from class, you must obtain an official leave of absence. To do so, visit “Student’s Leave Application” at https://stuoffcourse.nctu.edu.tw/. 2. If your leave is granted, you are considered present. You will also receive the average quiz grade of the whole semester as the credit of your missing quiz. 3. If you should be absent without a leave for four (4) times (inclusive), you will not be allowed to take the final exam. Weekly Quizzes 1. Preparations. There will be 11 weekly quizzes throughout the semester, each of which will be on an online program (BBC, CNN, TIME, etc) and Taiwan’s HStudio Classroom. 2. The quiz will be given as soon as the class begins each week. No make-up quiz will be given to latecomers. 3. Note this important interchange: a. Each week students will listen to one international online program and one Studio Classroom program. b. The specific website of the online program will be released to students one week prior to the quiz date. c. For the Studio Classroom broadcast, students listen to a program on the advanced level available at our e-Campus site one week prior to the quiz date. 4. Grading guidelines. Each weekly quiz will have 10 as the highest score, 1 as the lowest; 0 means that you have been absent from class without a proper reason. This is how the quiz and the grading process proceed: a. Write down on a piece of paper your Chinese name, your ID number, and the week number (e.g., Week 5). b. 12 questions will be read to you to answer, with 6 on the online program and the other 6 on Studio Classroom. c. The questions will be predominantly on the broadcast, but not on the transcripts or the texts of the print magazine. You can bring your notes in, though not the magazine, without sharing them with your classmates. d. Make your answers to the questions as short as possible. e. If your score exceeds 10, the quiz grade for the week remains 10. 5. Further grading matters. a. You will be considered present for the first three (3) leaves to receive an average quiz grade for the quizzes you have missed, after which each quiz you miss will be graded as 1.0 with a leave, or as 0 without one. b. Quiz grades, as well as other grades, will be updated at a regular basis at the e-Campus site. If you suspect an error in your grades posted there, send your query to the teaching assistant. In your e-mail, always note clearly your full name in Chinese and your student’s I.D. c. For each leave that you are granted, you are considered present. If you have full attendance the whole semester, you will get a 5% extra grade for your overall semester grade. For example, if your grade is 80, it will be increased to 84. If, however, after the adjustment your grade exceeds 85, you receive 85. d. This bonus grade, as well as the due credit(s) for your missing quiz(zes), will only be calculated and added to your overall grade by the semester's end.
