This course introduces students to basic communication skills in academic and non-academic settings. We will use our textbook and other audiovisual resources (TED talks and other clips of the students' interest) to expand vocabulary, pick up context-appropriate expressions, and learn the knack for effective communication. Please refer to our New E3 website for weekly clips or readings for discussion.

Participation and Quizzes (1) If you are late for class, you may miss quizzes and lose points. Tardiness also makes it difficult to make public announcements and start our activities on time. (2) If you are on sick or official leave, please let me know in advance and use the Students Leave System. Legitimate leaves—not including personal leaves—will exempt you from the deduction of participation grade TWICE at most. A third absence will often entail getting 0 point for one quiz. (3) Undocumented and personal leaves will always affect your participation grade. You will get 0 point for the quiz that week, and you will lose points for lack of participation. (4) The quizzes will cover vocabulary and main ideas in our previous class. I may have you define some crucial words or use them to make meaningful sentences. (5) I will choose the highest 90% of your quiz scores for the final score. If you miss more than two quizzes without any exemption, your grade will probably suffer greatly. Mid-Term Exam and Final Project (1) For the mid-term exam, you will record a brief response (4-5 minutes) to a news piece, a TED talk, or some other audiovisual clip. (2) For your final project, you are supposed to work in groups of two, find a topic of your interest, and present your material in TED-esque style (15 minutes or so). We will walk through the process throughout the term. You may talk about a book, a poem, a song, a painting, or a social issue, among other topics. You must cite sources and share your own thoughts. Email Exchange (1) Please do not email me on New E3. It is difficult to reply when I am reading your message on my phone. If you have any question, please send your message to chku@nctu.edu.tw. (2) Please call me Prof. Ku, Chung-Hao, CHK, or Richard (preferred). (3) Emails are for short notifications. If you have a list of questions, please ask me in class, make appointments, or visit me during my office hours. (4) Please identify yourself in your message. Give me your Chinese/English names and student ID number, please. (5) Your message should come with an appropriate subject line. An appropriate subject line will help me remember and retrieve your message.
