Geotechnical engineers devote a significant part of our work and budget to site characterization. Practical economic constraints limit the number of exploratory borings we can drill and the number of laboratory tests we can perform. Furthermore, conventional borehole sampling and in situ testing focus on mechanical properties (strength and deformation characteristics) and have small sampling range. Geophysical testing methods become more and more important because they complement conventional subsurface exploration perfectly with large sampling range and 2D or even 3D physical imaging. They have various applications in conventional and geo-environmental site characterization. There is also a trend in applying geophysical testing to geo-hazard monitoring and ground improvement assessment. This course is aimed to introduce basics of geophysics and cover common engineering geophysical methods. This course will also teach students procedures for the analysis of signals and characterization of systems in civil engineering. These two topics are at the core of several fast-growing areas in civil engineering today, including: non-destructive testing, system identification, image processing, local or remote monitoring, smart structures, dynamic loading, and feedback control systems in transportation and structural engineering.
