訓練碩、博士學生閱讀論文、表達、主持演講之能力,及擴展儀器分析化學領域學識,並培養學生對學術演講的尊重。 1. English is the working language throughout the course. 2. Attendance at each seminar is mandatory for all the students who register for this course. Every student can be absent 1 times IF he/she informs the coordinator and provides a valid proof (e.g. statement from medical clinic), or a valid reason (e.g. unforeseen sickness) of such absence. 3. Due dates will be established for your abstracts. Submit your abstract with your tentative title to Prof. You-Zung Hsieh (yzhsieh@mail.nctu.edu.tw) two week before your presentation (For example, presenters on 10/15 shall send their abstracts by 10/1, 6:00 AM). Failure to meet deadlines will also be taken into account in final grading. Abstracts should be concise (within 200 words), one or two paragraphs describing the complete story of your topic. Do not "copy and paste" any text from the original papers. 4. You are required to present your scientific materials during a 35 minute period (±5 mins of the allotted time is acceptable) on your scheduled date (see attached table). Your seminar should cover at least two related peer reviewed papers in a given topic. You should be thoroughly familiar with the literature on your topic and strive to organize your seminar into a cohesive presentation, and be specific about what you present. Try to explain concepts simply and clearly, and define all terms and acronyms. Visual aids should look professional and be readable in the entire room; use spell check and proofread for typos. 5. You are required to demonstrate the ability to critically evaluate the research presented in the peer-reviewed articles and to answer questions posed by the audience at the end of the presentation. 6. You are also required to act as the host of one seminar, according to the rotation schedule. 7. Demonstrate an ability to listen to a scientific presentation and to ask relevant questions regarding the material presented. It is expected that students shall actively participate by asking speakers the questions. (You are required to ask at least 3 questions among all presented topics).

Detailed evaluation criteria as follows: a. The base score will be calculated as the arithmetic average of the scores submitted by faculty members present in the seminar. b. If a student absence within the 1× absence limit, 5 points will be deducted. If a student absence within the 1× absence limit, but he/she does not inform the coordinator and provides a valid proof of such absence, 15 points will be deducted. c. If a student has been absent in more than 1 seminars, 25 points will be deducted at the second and any subsequent absence (no deduction maximum is set for this part). d. Coming late by 30 min (or more) counts as absence, and is regulated by the rules (b) and (c). e. Coming late by 5 min (or between 5 min and 29 min) counts as coming late, coming late twice counts as one absence and is regulated by the rules (b) and (c). f. If a student has submitted his/her seminar abstract after the deadline, or the submitted material is unformatted, or have poor quality – up to 5 points will be deducted. g. If a student has not asked the minimum of 3 reasonable questions, 3 points will be deducted. h. If a student has asked more than 3 questions, 0.4 point will be added at the fourth and subsequent reasonable questions (maximum number of extra points for asking questions: 4 points; for example, 4 points can be granted to the students who have asked 11 or more reasonable questions in total).
